souq mosul
2021y
The project focuses on the reconstruction and reimagining of the historic souq in the center of Mosul — a vital urban and cultural landmark severely damaged after the 2014 destruction. The work begins with a deep analysis of the market's social role, its place within the old city's spatial fabric, and the architectural language of traditional Iraqi bazaars. The primary objective is to develop a comprehensive regeneration strategy capable of restoring the souq's function as a civic and commercial heart while adapting it to the contemporary needs of the community.
Developed within the multidisciplinary framework of the Architectural Design Studio at Politecnico di Milano, the project integrates urban analysis, typological study, structural considerations, and spatial experimentation. Particular attention is given to the dialogue between new interventions and surviving historic fragments, as well as to recovering the spatial logic and characteristic atmosphere of the traditional Middle Eastern marketplace. Rather than simply reconstructing what was lost, the proposal aims to establish a sustainable model that respects the heritage and cultural significance of this emblematic site.
The resulting architectural concept combines functional renewal, contextual sensitivity, and strong spatial identity, restoring the souq as a vibrant, tradition-rooted center of urban life in Mosul.
